Board unanimously votes to appoint Tim Trainor president

Communications Staff

Dear Mount Community,

I am writing to share exciting news with you. The Mount St. Mary’s Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to appoint Tim Trainor president, effective immediately.

As you know, President Trainor joined the Mount family last summer, and he and his wife, Donna, have become cherished members of our community. Over the past year, Tim has harnessed the energy of all of those who love the Mount to build remarkable forward momentum for the university and continued success for our students.

During Trainor’s tenure as interim president, he has focused the community on a list of shared priorities while developing a new strategic plan. He has also maintained our values as a Catholic liberal arts institution, emphasizing teamwork and keeping students at the center of all we do. He has overseen improvements in enrollment where the incoming freshman class is expected to be among the largest in Mount history at over 500 students and a freshman-to-sophomore retention rate likely to be greater than 80 percent, which would be the highest in years. He is also working on the university’s newest capital campaign, Forward! Together As One, with a goal to raise $30 million. He and Donna have traveled to meet with alumni and donors across the country and have led the way in what Tim calls “exporting our goodness,” sharing the Mount’s story far and wide.

Academic achievements this past year include three new academic programs, new academic leadership, an articulation agreement with Frederick Community College, the awarding of three student Fulbright scholarships, and securing a $1 million donation to create the Palmieri Center for Entrepreneurship and hiring its new director. Outside the classroom, Trainor oversaw efforts to elevate the women’s rugby program to a varsity level sport, the return of varsity men’s soccer, and the expansion of rosters for several existing Division I teams.

Perhaps most importantly, Tim has helped to restore trust, build community and improve communication across the campus. He has strengthened shared governance and helped the university navigate the challenges facing all of higher education while remaining true to our roots as a Catholic liberal arts institution.

Making Tim’s appointment permanent was the unanimous recommendation of the Selection Committee, comprised of trustees, alumni, faculty, staff and students. On behalf of the board, I was thrilled to receive that recommendation and to record a unanimous vote of the board. Being able to make this announcement while generations of Mount alumni are here on campus for Reunion is particularly special, and I know President Trainor is eager to continue his work with all of you to ensure that future generations of students continue to enter the world prepared for personal and professional lives of consequence.

I am grateful to the members of the Selection Committee for their work, to Tim and Donna for their commitment to the Mount, and to you for all you do on behalf of the university and our students.

Mary D. Kane
Chair, Board of Trustees
