Monahan award feature

Professor Elizabeth Monahan poses with James Plamondon, chair of the SJCP Board of Trustees, and Thomas Powell, president of SJCP.

Professor Elizabeth Monahan quietly and humbly has worked for more than 30 years in service to Catholic education as an educator and a consulting resource to schools. In recognition of this body of work, St. John's Catholic Prep (SJCP) awarded Monahan with its President's Medal at its 186th commencement on May 23.

"This award recognizes your outstanding service to Catholic education, particularly in preparing teachers and school leaders to better serve students and parents," said SJCP President Thomas H. Powell, Ph.D. "Your service to Catholic schools is worthy of recognition and honor."

Monahan, who directs both the Center for Catholic School Excellence and the Professional Development School program in the Mount's Division of Education, also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. She came to the Mount in 1992 from Loyola University Maryland where she served as an instructor. Through the years, Monahan has served the education division through her roles as a professor in residence at St. John Regional Catholic School, director of graduate studies and Weekend College coordinator. She also served the Office of Advancement for four years as the bicentennial director.

The Center for Catholic School Excellence, founded in 2009, promotes reflection, strategic planning and inquiry with parish and diocesan leaders.  The Center serves as a professional development resource and provides consulting services for teachers and administrators in P-12 Catholic schools.
