I’m sure that I’m not the only one who is surprised to see Christmas decorations around campus and hear talk of New Year’s plans and next semester. For my fellow seniors, this also means attempting to embrace the realization that there is only one more semester left in our college careers. Using the semester break to make some career headway is one way to prepare yourself for the future. Read onward for some quick reminders and tips to help you use your break wisely as you prepare for your final semester at your mountain home and for what comes next.
Research Jobs. After you catch up on your rest, winter break is the perfect time to start researching job opportunities before the craziness of next semester ensues. Searching on MountHired, LinkedIn, and Indeed and bookmarking jobs that seem interesting to you will put you at an advantage once you start applying next semester. Students may also stop by the Career Center to meet with a counselor to discuss other resources.
Check Your Degree Progress. Though registration has already happened, it’s good to double-check that you will have completed all your required courses by May 2020. Consider asking the registrar for an official degree audit and reviewing your major and core curriculum requirements though the online course catalog found on the Mount’s website.
Go shopping. Yup, you read that right. Take some time over break to go shopping for some business professional clothes for when you start landing interviews. If you’re on a budget like I am, larger department stores such as Boscov’s or Kohl’s often carry name-brand lines at a significantly cheaper price. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out your local thrift store for some bargain, gently used professional clothing.
As always, if you have any questions feel free to make an appointment at the Career Center at carrercenter@msmary.edu. Thank you for reading my blogs this past semester and following me along my own career journey and thank you to the amazing Career Center team who has helped me grow as a writer, professional, and person. Additionally, look out for more articles from the wonderful Grace Crane who will be interning at the Career Center next semester. I wish you all the best in your current and future career endeavors. Go Mount!
