Mount St. Mary’s University announced Professor of Biochemistry Christine Seitz McCauslin, Ph.D., will serve as interim dean of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. She replaced Kraig Sheetz, Ph.D., who became executive vice president on January 25, 2021.

“As I look at the changes that are happening across the institution, all of them are geared toward strengthening the institution and supporting student success,” she said. “I hope to continue the momentum of Dr. Sheetz’s leadership in building the programming, partnerships and experiences that make our graduates highly competitive.”

The School of Natural Science and Mathematics recently launched three new flagship programs: data science, cybersecurity and neuroscience. “Being adaptable, flexible and interested in pursuing cross-disciplinary training is the way of the future. There will be a demand for individuals who can work across disciplines,” McCauslin explained.

“Graduates of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics will enter a rapidly changing work environment. Our goal is to help students develop the mindset and skills that will prepare them to   adapt and evolve quickly in response to the challenges they will encounter,” she added.

McCauslin has presented on a range of relevant topics including Nobel Prize Symposium, Commentator: Business Symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility, and Reconciling Faith and Science. She is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Associate Member of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. Her scholarly research has been published in academic journals including Blood, Experimental Hematology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education and the Journal of Biological Chemistry among others.

A graduation of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in biology, McCauslin earned a Master of Science in biomedical science from Hood College and received her doctorate in genetics from George Washington University. Before arriving at the Mount in 2004, she conducted research in laboratories based at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Garth Patterson, Ph.D., will become chair of the Department of Science.
