Sales of Archbishop John Hughes Biography to Benefit Mount Archives

Bishop of New York until his death in 1864, Archbishop John Hughes, or “Dagger John” to his opponents, is remembered in the major 1977 biography by Rev. Richard Shaw. Shaw recently signed over publishing rights to Mount St. Mary's University, which signed with Wipf and Stock Publishers to reprint this important work. Archbishop Hughes, a 1826 Mount St. Mary's Seminary graduate, helped to establish the carefully structured Romanized church as a dominant norm of the American religious scene.

dagger-john-book-cover-design-in-text.jpgDagger John: The Unquiet Life and Times of Archbishop John Hughes of New York, reflects updated research surrounding the life of Hughes and his many struggles, including his various battles and dealings with public figures, fellow bishops, revolutionaries, presidents, popes and his own Catholic clergy. Hughes became a strong political force and adamant advocate for the rights of Irish immigrants in the mid-19th century when the Catholic Church was hesitantly tolerated in America, let alone New York. He was known for his aggressive personality and transformative work in the diocese.

Dagger John is available in paperback, hardcover, or eBook formats from Wipf and Stock.

This is the second of Shaw's book to be signed over to the Mount and to be reprinted by Wipf and Stocks Publishers. The university and publisher teamed up in 2018 to reprint John Dubois: Founding Father, the definitive biography of the founder of Mount St. Mary's. John Dubois is available from Wipf and Stock in paperback or eBook formats or from Amazon in paperback.

Proceeds from both books are being directed to preservation of the historic papers and artifacts in the Mount Archives.
