Cool Courses at the Mount

Gregory Afolabi-Brown, C'22

Hello readers! My name is Gregory Afolabi-Brown, and I am currently a second semester senior at Mount St. Mary's University. My name is sort of a mouth full so I just go by Greg.

I plan to graduate in a few months with a major in communication. However, when I first came to “the Mount,” I was planning to major in political science and minor in business. But I am so glad that I decided to change my degree plan because of the skills, knowledge, and experience I gained through some of the unique/fun courses at this institution.

One of the courses that met these criteria was the Mount’s Radio Practicum. In this course students are exposed to what it is like to work in a live radio room. Members within this program were also allowed to host either two 1-hour radio shows each week, or one 2-hour radio show a week. Since students oversaw hosting and operating the radio show, the style/topic of the show is left totally to the discretion of the participants (students). The only requirement/responsibilities the students had to meet were reading the WMTB radio show announcements at the pre-set times given to students in the radio room. Opening the show, students must be live on the microphone and introduce the station themselves, and a quick weather update. You can also partner with someone else in the program if you don't want to host a show by yourself. After meeting the station requirements for identification and providing a weather update, students can then proceed with whatever content they decide to air for their show.

Having the opportunity to learn new skills and be on the air on the Mount's radio station (High on the Mountain, Low on the Dial) has helped me to begin to determine what my future might look like. Over the course of this semester, I'll share more about my path to discovering more about myself and who I want to be as I share My View of MSMU with you.
