Handshake is an online platform to network as well as explore job opportunities, events, workshops and internships. Over 700,000 employers use this reputable source to connect with students, post opportunities, and host workshops and events. Handshake is acclaimed as, “The #1 Way College Students Get Hired.” It is an excellent resource that is free to all Mount students regardless of major or year.
The Career Center connects with external employers and then regularly approves listings for available positions, local and otherwise. We have over 5,000 jobs currently posted. Through Handshake, you can find and follow employers that are tailored to your search.
Even if you are not currently looking for a job or internship, the Career Center encourages you to log in to Handshake and explore its options. Preparing your profile in advance allows you to start building connections with future employers, alumni and other Mount students. Additionally, job applications are usually a major source of anxiety for students. Preparation is helpful in decreasing anxiety. Your future should not come at the cost of your current mental health. Creating a Handshake profile will help set you up for success. The time taken to set up a profile (less than an hour if you follow the guide below!) is an investment in yourself.
Where Do I Get Started? Log in at https://msmary.joinhandshake.com using your Mount username and password. A series of guided questions clarify what you are looking for in your career-related search. Answering these questions allows Handshake to curate available positions for you and understand your needs better.
Saving Time: Build Your Profile Faster. Next, upload your resume to Handshake. Be sure it is polished and up to date. The Career Center is holding a Resume Workshop on Tuesday, March 15; this is an excellent opportunity to get personalized, professional feedback. The Career Center is also hosting a Resume Check-In event on Wednesday, March 16 for brief resume reviews.
The information from your resume will automatically update your profile, saving you time. Read through the auto-generated content when it uploads and correct any errors or missing information. Be honest and accurate with your profile. Be sure to add a headshot of you in professional attire and an appropriate background, similar to something that you would add to LinkedIn. You can even use the photo on your Mount ID to make this process as easy as possible.
Next Steps. After building your profile, you can continue exploring all Handshake has to offer, including searching for internships and jobs. In this process, you can apply filters to your search to narrow down your options. You can select if you are looking for only paid roles or other positions. You can also specify a preferred location − are you looking for a summer job in your hometown or something during the school year?
Through Handshake, you can schedule an appointment with the Career Center. You also have access to the Career Center’s extensive Resource Library. If you still have questions or want another opinion on your new profile, come to the Career Center!
