Fishing around the Mount

Tommy Grothmann

With days slowly getting up to normal springtime temperatures, there are a ton of places to go fishing around campus if that strikes your interest. Whether it is fly fishing or pond fishing, the hills and mountains provide great creeks and ponds to fish. Fishing is a great activity to do with your friends, and it is also a great thing to do by yourself. It's all about just getting out and enjoying the scenery while doing something fun.

My favorite spot to fly fish is in the Frederick Watershed which is only about a 15-minute drive from the Mount and is easily accessible by plugging in the destination into your maps app on your phone. Typically, in the Frederick Watershed you will catch brook trout and rainbow trout, which if you do not know they are beautiful fish. You may need to have some fly-fishing experience to fish in this area because the creeks are small, and they are filled with native fish which are more picky than stocked fish.

If you are looking for an easier place to fish with more of a catch and release style, I would suggest that you drive minutes up the road to Fairfield, Pennsylvania and fish the ponds at Liberty Mountain Resort. All the ponds at Liberty are frequently stocked with fish so it makes it easy to catch at least something, and you don’t need to be there long before you get a bite. My friends and I love going to these ponds because you never know when a massive bass will bite and knowing that there is that chance makes it way more fun.

After fishing the ponds at Liberty, I suggest that you walk over to the sports bar that is on Liberty's property for a few drinks and appetizers. This is a great way to end the day and have fun with your friends.

If you enjoyed this post, I suggest that you come back next week for another update about things to do both on and off campus at the Mount!
