My Next Step After Graduation

Michael Gomez

With graduation just about three weeks away, that means it’s time for the next step in each senior’s life. Lately, I’ve had a lot to think about for what I’m planning to do once I finish my college education. While it is extremely exciting that I’m preparing to take the next major step in my life, it’s also a little frightening. I feel like my four years at this school have flown by, and it’s hard to believe that I’m graduating already. While I’ve made many amazing memories with great people at the Mount, I just can’t believe that it’s already almost over. The next step in my life after college is starting my adulthood, and I feel like Mount. St Mary’s has tremendously helped me prepare for this major leap.

While my plan for after college is to start an internship right after graduation, I do plan on getting a job at some point after that. While I do have my parents to assist me in starting this new journey, I also have everything I’ve learned at the Mount. Not only have the professors, advisors, and other staff at the Mount helped prepare all of us for this transition, but some of the core classes that we have taken have also helped prepare us. As freshmen, the classes that students were permitted to take challenged us to think and put good use to our brains.

In Symposium class during freshman year, we learned a lot of information about both fixed and growth mindsets. I feel as if the growth mindset is the superior mindset that an individual needs to have in order to succeed in taking this big of a leap in life. With a fixed mindset, individuals believe that traits and qualities are unchangeable, while people with a growth mindset believe in improving and growing certain traits and qualities. With a growth mindset, it is a lot easier for an individual to focus on improvement, rather than just being satisfied with what they have. Although I don’t know if I’m fully ready to take this next step in my life, I know that the things I’ve learned from Mount will play a major key in that and my future success.
