Pope Francis has appointed Msgr. Juan R. Esposito-Garcia, S'08, of the Archdiocese of Washington as an auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese. Bishop-elect Esposito is currently serving as an official in the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican.
Born in Argentina, Bishop-designate Esposito was a student in the Seminary’s ESL program and completed his priestly formation at the Mount, obtaining a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Moral Theology. He was ordained a priest for the Washington Archdiocese in June 2008. While working full-time at the Archdiocesan Tribunal, he was an adjunct professor of canon law and spiritual director at the Seminary from 2014-17. He has been a dicastery official since 2018 and was named a monsignor in 2021. He speaks Spanish, English and Italian.
In sharing the news of Bishop-elect Esposito’s appointment with the Seminary community, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary Rector Rev. Msgr. Andrew Baker noted that the bishop-elect has asked for prayers from the Seminary community. “Please join me in praying for our latest Mount bishop,” Baker said.
"He is an outstanding example of a Mount priest who is happy, holy, and zealous," Baker said. "I am personally very pleased with his nomination to the episcopacy, and I look forward to his ministry in Washington.”
The episcopal ordination for Bishop-elect Esposito, who will become the 55th bishop from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, is scheduled for February 21, 2023.
