On January 20 a group of Mount students and FOCUS missionaries made the trip in university-sponsored vans to Washington, D.C. for the 50th annual March for Life, focused on the theme “Next Steps: Marching in a Post-Roe America.” The Mount was also represented by the seminarians, all of whom attended the March and a special Mass in Washington, D.C. afterward.
Additionally, the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes held a special Adoration and rosary service during the afternoon, inviting visitors to offer prayers for the end of abortion.
Emma Smith, C’23, attended the March with the Mount’s group. She noted that the March “once again brought together a diverse group of people who believe in the special place and purpose of each individual, born or unborn, in God's creation. Being a part of this experience was itself life-giving, leading me to examine how I personally and the Mount as a university can be more conscious of creating a culture of life in everyday actions, beginning with the vulnerable children still in the womb.”
Every January for the past 50 years, thousands have gathered at the National Mall to walk to the United States Supreme Court building in protest of the legalization of abortion. This year, notable speakers at the rally before the March began included actor Jonathan Roumie (from The Chosen), Rep. Steve Scalise, R-LA, Rep. Chris Smith, R-NJ, and former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy.
