The Mount St. Mary’s Career Fair is being held on Tuesday, February 28 from 2:30-5 p.m. More than 60 employers will be looking for their next employee and/or intern. For some students, the Career Fair is their first-time networking and marketing themselves to employers, and for others it could lead to the beginning of their professional career.
If you are concerned an employer that you find appealing isn’t necessarily oriented toward your major, the event page on Handshake will reveal plenty of employers such as Advance, Dustin Construction, M&T Bank, and many more who are accepting students of any major. On the flip side, if you are undecided on your major or not sure what line of work you want to pursue, having meaningful conversations with a diverse range of employers becomes even more important so that you are able to better understand what you want to do in your professional life.
The interviewing tips listed by the Career Center professionals in my February 10 article are especially applicable at an event like the Career Fair. While you are talking with employers for a brief time rather than having a full or official job interview, the strong first impression you made will make you stand out and be remembered by the recruiter.
If you are on the fence about registering for the Career Fair or questioning if it is worthwhile, remember that it is a learning experience to build upon whenever you are searching for a job. You will always have one positive takeaway and likely will make an impression on at least one potential employer.
Let’s review the checklist one last time. In preparation for February 28, you should ensure that your resume looks the best it can, you have business professional attire, and you review talking points or questions about the employers whose tables you plan on visiting. To all attending, good luck at the Career Fair.
