Mind Over Matter

Colby Davis, C'23

Kelly Shanley C'23

The best thing I have done during this waiting period is taking time for myself. One of my roommates, Kelly, and I are in the same boat. She is also a senior ready to move onto the next chapter in life. It is nice living with someone who understands what I am going through. Because we both feel this way, we push each other to keep studying while also taking breaks. We have discovered how much better we feel after going on long walks. On a nice day, Kelly and I take advantage of the Mount’s location.

As Spring Break arrives and senior year begins to wind down, I am beginning to feel the effects of senioritis. I’m sure we have all been here where we are antsy for a break. However, just because I am ready for this break, I am not done learning. The week before Spring Break means midterms. It is the light at the end of the tunnel. This is the motivation needed to push through and study. My grades are no exception to burnout.

One thing we always say is how blessed we are to be in a somewhat isolated area. This allows us to feel comfortable to go across the street, just the two of us, and set out on the outdoor walking path. We walk around four miles and do not even realize it. Every time we do this we comment upon how much better we feel mentally. We have also discovered a love for painting. These are the simple things that go a long way for our mental health. Having a support system like Kelly is beneficial as we hold each other accountable, while also understanding where each other are coming from.

I am excited for Spring Break, and I know I will come back recharged. As this break approaches, basketball season comes to end and athletics rolls into spring sports. This includes baseball, softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, track, and tennis. Coming back to new sports will also allow me to feel refreshed. I am excited to see what I will be doing in the Sports Information office in regard to these sports.
