Spotlight on Internships

Trent Aughinbaugh, C;24
Career Center Intern

Mount St. Mary’s is home to many students with vastly different interests. This applies to the professional world as well, with many students participating in internships across a wide variety of fields. Most students gain internship/workplace experience before graduation, and the Mount has no shortage of opportunities regardless of your major or intended career. Workplace experience, or at the very least experience in the field you want a career in, is helpful before you fully settle into your career.

Andrea Cabrera, C’24, a business major, worked at Identity Inc., a nonprofit organization in Gaithersburg, Maryland. During her internship, she worked as a parent facilitator case manager. “I would help parents that needed more information about the school system to fully be able to provide their kids with the help that they needed to succeed in school,” she explained. “I would also help parents with making sure that they were receiving adequate help if they need extra support in paying bills and/or help with arranging living areas for families.” She went on to elaborate on how unique of an experience this was for her. Not only did she gain valuable, real-world experience but during this time she was making a positive impact on the world by assisting parents who were in need.

Cooper Griffiths, C’24, discussed his time at D.C. Witness during the fall semester. “I had access to court cases virtually, and I composed articles about every detail of those court hearings which were posted on the company website. As an intern, I conducted in-depth research on criminal court cases in Washington D.C,”  Griffiths said. In addition, Griffiths consulted with others to build up as much information as possible, constructed data for projects on court case analysis, and collaborated with stakeholders to coordinate information on court witnesses, evidence, and testimonies. D.C. Witness is an immensely popular company for showing every court case there is in the D.C. area without having any of them go unreported. Griffiths, a criminal justice major, has expressed interest in working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The internship experience relating directly to his’s desired career field makes Griffiths a more appealing candidate.

Internships can greatly affect your future. Therefore, as a Mount student, it is to your advantage to learn more about potential internship opportunities.
