As finals week approaches, the atmosphere on campus brims with both anticipation and anxiety. Finals loom over everyone’s heads, marking the culmination of months of hard work. As a student navigating these times myself, I’ve encountered numerous challenges and triumphs, each shaping how I approach my finals.
One of the pivotal aspects of my approach is undoubtedly my study routine. I vividly remember my first year being somewhat disastrous due to my lack of organization. Papers were scattered across the floor, and the overwhelming amount of information I tried to cram into my head felt like a ticking time bomb. However, over time, I stumbled upon the Pomodoro Technique, breaking down study sessions into short intervals with breaks. This method not only helped me maintain focus but also staved off burnout. Moreover, I retained information longer than when I used to cram incessantly.
Despite embracing the Pomodoro Technique, balancing multiple subjects remained challenging. Determining which subject to tackle first, especially with the added pressure of synthesis essays alongside tests, became a struggle. It was then that I realized the necessity of honing my time management skills. Stress became my wake-up call, urging me to devise a detailed study schedule, allocating dedicated time to each subject and prioritizing based on upcoming exam dates. This approach provided direction and prevented the chaos of scattered studying.
Amidst these challenges, the wealth of resources available on campus became my support system. The Mount offers tutors, understanding professors, counseling services, and one of my favorites—the Night Against Procrastination. This year's event on December 3rd was filled with adorable therapy dogs that brought smiles to every student's face, along with the ever-delicious donuts. However, the source of these delectable treats remains a mystery to me. Additionally, the camaraderie felt in the library remaining open all night during finals week fosters a sense of community among students striving to end the semester successfully.
Understanding the significance of self-care during finals week was a pivotal realization for me. In my initial years, I overlooked self-care, plowing through tasks only to feel somewhat despondent at the end. Now, incorporating walks, meditation, snacks, and engaging with others has become crucial. Having a study buddy, even in silent companionship, adds a layer of motivation and enjoyment to prolonged study sessions.
In conclusion, my journey through finals has been woven with challenges, changes, and personal growth. Each semester brings unique lessons to learn, fostering adaptability. As I gear up for this semester’s finals, armed with experiences from the past, I approach these exams with newfound resilience, integrating lessons learned along the way.
