Tackling the Big Questions

Theology lunches

Theological study raises thought-provoking questions, that are often enjoyable to discuss with a group. To work through some of Catholicism’s biggest questions, the Mount’s Theology Department meets twice a month for open discussions about the many ideas and mysteries of faith. In the fall semester, the department explored the topics of suffering; Mary, the Mother of God; and how to practice faith in relationships.

theology-lunches-2-in-text.jpgThe talks were held on the front porch of Bradley Hall in warm weather, but are otherwise on Bradley’s fourth floor, in the Theology Department’s conference room. Pizza is provided for all participating students. A brief five- or ten-minute lecture, led by a professor, introduced each subject and gave the Catholic perspective on it before the floor opened for students to make comments and ask questions.

Roberto de la Noval, Ph.D., assistant professor of theology, was the first presenter. He shared his experiences with and thoughts on suffering, posing the question of why an all-good God would allow so much suffering in the world? The conversation jumped from topics like free will, to predetermination, forgiveness, and the afterlife. De la Noval explained that, in his experience, it is best to accept that there are not always answers that humans can understand. Ways to accept suffering include prayer and cultivating humility and honesty.

The theology department held these lunches to provide an opportunity for students and faculty from different fields to come together. The Mount attracts students of various backgrounds and religions—events such as this create a forum for students to share their faith, beliefs and knowledge freely.
