Senior Ian Schwing triumphed at the Men’s U.S. National Mountain Biking Championship at Ride Rock Creek in North Carolina. Schwing’s victory is the latest in an extensive line of achievements that have defined his career since childhood, marking him as one of the most promising mountain biking athletes in the Mid-Atlantic.
Ian Schwing’s journey in mountain biking began early, with roots firmly planted in a family legacy. Both of his parents, Stephen, C’92, and Laura, C’94, are proud alumni of Mount St. Mary’s. Stephen Schwing, who received his first mountain bike in 1988, played a pivotal role in shaping Ian's passion. The elder Schwing introduced Ian Schwing to the university’s Lookout Trail, which connects to various logging and 4x4 trails at the Mount, igniting a lifelong love for the sport.
Growing up with direct access to the Patapsco Valley trail system, Schwing quickly developed his skills, leading to an impressive high school career. He captured two Maryland state titles and two Virginia state titles, establishing himself as a dominant force in regional competitions. Representing the Mount in the USA Cycling Collegiate league, Schwing’s talent
continued to shine through. He placed third in the collegiate national championship in his sophomore year and moved up to second place last year, positioning this year as his chance to claim the top spot.
In 2022, Schwing demonstrated his endurance and versatility by winning the Men’s U.S. Marathon National Championship. This summer he transitioned to racing in the Pro division of Enduro mountain biking, where he achieved victories at Snowshoe, West Virginia, Greek Peak, New York, and Glen Park, Pennsylvania. Ian’s success continued in August when he won the Men’s Open division at the Bike Doctor Sheduro event, held at his home trails in the Frederick Watershed. This victory, close to home, is a testament to his dedication and deep connection to the local trails that have been a part of his life since childhood.
As Schwing, a mathematics major, looks ahead to the rest of the season and beyond, his recent wins highlight not only his skill and determination but also the solid foundation laid by his family and community. Schwing already has begun giving back to the Mount and the local community. He leads the university’s club mountain bike team, taking the group on local bike trail rides. During the past several summers, Schwing has run a half-week mountain bike skills and race camp at the university that helps kids hone their skills on the bike trails surrounding the Mount. Schwing’s achievements continue to inspire the next generation of mountain bikers, making him a champion both on and off the trails.
