Miles of Smiles

Chloe McCarthy, C'27

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my blog! Today, I will give you a recap of my 5k at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, my first since last May! It was a fun weekend full of sunshine and running!

Chloe on track in South CarolinaMy favorite track event is the 5k; I love the long-distance events! I was diagnosed with an injury in August that put me out for quite a while. I was able to race twice indoors but, only the 3k, so I was extremely excited for my first 5k after coming back!

We packed all of our stuff onto the bus Wednesday morning and headed out for a long day of driving. Once we arrived, a few of my teammates and I went for a shakeout run. We then went to the grocery store and got all of our fuel for the weekend.

When we got back to the hotel, we watched the sunset from our balcony and got ready for bed. The next morning, we Sunrise in South Carolinahad our pre-meet at 9:a.m. and then I did all of my pre-race rituals to get ready for race day. My friends and I got our coffees when we got back to the hotel, and we went out on the beach to tan for the rest of the day.

The next day I woke up and ran a little shakeout before hopping on the bus to head to the track. Once I got to the track, it was time to get my mind ready for my race. Last year, I would have been consumed by my nerves but today was different, I was more excited than nervous.

After experiencing so many injuries (and long-lasting ones), I have found a greater sense of joy, and gratefulness before I toe the line. I know what it is like to wish I could race. I know that not every race will be a personal record, but I am so filled with gratitude and appreciation for the sport that no matter what, it is still always an accomplishment!

The weekend was full of bonding moments with my teammates, and I am grateful to be a part of such a tight-knit team that celebrates other's successes even more than their own!

That's all for now, I hope you enjoyed reading this week's blog post! Until next time:)
