Associate Professor of Business Josey Chacko, Ph.D., returned this spring from six months teaching, mentoring and learning at the Technical University of Mombasa in Kenya. Chacko served as a visiting professor, teaching supply chain and operations management, as a Fulbright Scholar.

Josey Chacko at TUM“My work primarily included teaching both undergraduates and graduates. Without a doubt, working directly with students was the most rewarding part of the program. The dynamic classroom environment made teaching incredibly fulfilling,” he shared. “In addition to teaching, I had the opportunity to mentor a management science department faculty member in research, as he pursues a Ph.D. in supply chain management.”

Chacko traveled to Kenya last August as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar, a highly competitive program that enables established teaching professionals, researchers and administrators to conduct research and teach at various universities and research institutes abroad. Chacko, who grew up and attended school in Kenya, hopes to continue to be involved in Kenyan higher education.

He returned to Mount St. Mary’s in January 2025 after six months of memorable collaboration.

“Highlights included co-leading a faculty workshop with Dr. Mathew Egessa, chair of the Management Science MombasaDepartment. The session brought together faculty from across the business school and fostered a spirit of collaboration. I also appreciated the insightful one-on-one conversations with the dean, Dr. Kitheka, and the department chair, Dr. Egessa. They offered thoughtful reflections on the unique challenges and opportunities of academic life in Kenya in conversations that were both humbling and inspiring,” he shared.

Chacko plans to let his Kenyan experiences inform his work at the Mount, with the goal of “bringing a more global perspective to my courses, especially insights from working in a resource-constrained but innovation-rich environment,” he shared.

“More broadly, I hope to inspire students and colleagues at Mount on the value of global programs like the Fulbright, as well as to think globally—about the challenges we share, the solutions we can learn from one another, and how cross-cultural experiences can broaden both our minds and our hearts.”
