Jill Barnes, who is currently enrolled in the Advanced Study in Reading program at the Mount, has received the NEA (National Education Association) Leadership Grant. This grant will assist her in running a Summer Reading Clinic for intense needs students, where she will coach teachers in the area of reading and writing instruction.
Barnes has been in education for 18 years and she has spent six years of that as a literacy specialist. She is currently a literacy specialist with Valley Elementary School in Jefferson, Maryland. Through her program at the Mount, she will conduct research relating to guided writing. As Barnes explained, “I chose the topic because writing instruction is a passion of mine, and writing and reading must relate for our students. This grant will help with my research because some of the coaching I will do with teachers involved in the clinic for professional learning will relate to guided writing and its power for their students.”
The Division of Education looks forward to seeing the results and successes of Barnes's research.
